Presenting…an HYP Book Club first – the second book and movie discussion in a row! This month, we’re reading, watching, and discussing “The Circle” by Dave Eggers. It’s a story about a woman who lands a dream job at an amazing Google/Apple-like tech company. But all is not as it seems, as it begins to influence her life, her family, and all those around her. We’ll be meeting at the Harrisburg East Mall at the show closest to noon to watch the film and then trek over to the Midtown Scholar to discuss the book and film. Get ready for another book and movie discussion from HYP Book Club! This month, we’re reading, watching, and discussing, the classic dystopian story from George Orwell, “1984.” It’s the well-known tale of a repressive, totalitarian government that controls every facet of human life, and a lowly worker who tries to rebel against it and realize his individuality. We’ll be meeting at the Midtown Cinema at 7 (movie is at 7:30), to allow time for a brief discussion before the film. Then we’ll watch the film and discuss the book and film after. Time for one last movie before the Oscars!
The Oscar-nominated documentary “I Am Not Your Negro” is a visioning of James Baldwin’s unfinished book, “Remember This House.” In it, director Raoul Peck uses only the author’s words (narrated by Samuel L. Jackson) and archival footage to talk about race in America. It’s interwoven with an examination of the lives of three of Baldwin’s friends and important civil rights figures: Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers and Malcolm X. This is important, must-see cinema, served up as only the Midtown Cinema can.

Join us at the Midtown Cinema for a movie that’s sure to be included in the awards season discussion – “Jackie.” It’s the aftermath of the JFK assassination, and and Jacqueline Kennedy’s world has been torn apart. She must simultaneously be a mother, a widow, and a public figure, all the while balancing an ongoing adjustment to American culture and negotiating life in Washington, DC. The film stars Natalie Portman in the title role and played at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Time for some great thought-provoking cinema in August, with this month’s film, “Captain Fantastic.” The film stars Viggo Mortensen and Frank Langella, and was a big hit at Sundance and Cannes. It’s about a father who raises his kids off the grid in the forest, and is forced to deal with the consequences when they have to integrate into the ‘real world.’ How will it go down?
