It’s February and that means book and movie time for the ol’ book club. This month brings us “Annihilation,” the first book in the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. It’s about a group of four female scientists exploring Area X, about which little is known. The previous 11 expeditions have not gone….shall we say, well. The movie adaptation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Oscar Isaac, and is directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, The Beach, etc).
We’ll meet at the Regal/Great Escape at the Harrisburg East Mall for the show closest to 12 pm noon; be sure to watch the facebook event page and your e-mail for updates. Then we’ll trek to the Midtown Scholar around 3:00 pm for a discussion of the book and the film. The winter is a great time for armchair mysteries, so we’re starting the new year out right with a classic by Agatha Christie, “And Then There Were None.” It’s considered by the author herself to be her most difficult book to write, and it’s one of the all-time best-selling books, with over 100 million copies sold! It’s a classic “locked-room” mystery whereby a group of people with murder in their past are invited to a secluded island…and start to drop one by one. Who’s killing them? We’ll discuss it in January.

***Special Note: We’re also starting a six-month challenge read, whereby we pick a lengthy book (1,000 or more pages) and take six months to read it. We’ll be picking the book at January’s meeting, and will be discussing the book in mid- to late July 2018. If interested, please e-mail Joe at the above e-mail.
November’s book is “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders. A National Book Award Finalist and NY Times bestseller, it’s a look at Lincoln like no other; mourning the death of his beloved son Willie, and spending a night visiting with old ghosts both recently and long ago departed. All of these ghosts have unique voices, and something to say to old Abe. And it’s likely they’ll have something to say to us. We’ll meet at the Midtown Scholar at 2:00 in the lobby – look for folks carrying copies of the books; then we’ll find a table in the back room.
