February is Black History Month, and Book Club is reading “Between the World and Me” by the supremely gifted and creative Ta-Nehisi Coates (“Black Panther,” “We Were Eight Years in Power,” among others). It’s a long letter to his son about being Black in the United States. It’s also a history lesson combined with Coates’ own experience. The book is short, but the experience is not. We will start the night with a cocktail hour, followed by a buffet meal and awards ceremony. Proceeds support HYP and our Emerging Philanthropist Program.

For anyone who’s read his work or seen his interviews (most recently in the stellar documentary, “I Am Not Your Negro”), you know what an important and inspiring writer (and human being) James Baldwin was and is. So now we get to read his book, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” It’s about a young African-American couple, their love for each other, their families, and an injustice that tears them apart and tests their commitment. The book was recently adapted into the stellar (and criminally under-nominated for the Oscars) movie of the same name – go see it if you’re able. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar.

Programming Note: In addition, we’re starting another challenge read. The challenge read is a separate book adventure, whereby we pick a (much) longer book than usual and read it over 6 months, periodically checking in at regular meetings. In the end, we’ll have a separate stand-alone meeting to discuss that book. The book is Haruki Marukami’s “1Q84.” The challenge read runs from January to June, and we’ll meet on July 14. There will be a separate posting for the challenge read, but feel free to e-mail Joe at joefoner1@gmail.com or check the HYP web site for further details.

Join HYP for Dinner and Drinks to help support the Millennium Music Conference on February 22, 2019. We will begin the evening with Dinner at Appalachian Brewing Company at 7:00 pm followed by live music upstairs at the Abbey Bar beginning at 8:30 pm.

The band lineup includes Sour Mash String Band, Black Horse Mote, Kevin Daniel & The Bottom Line, and James Ethan Clark and Renegades. Performances last until 11:30 pm and there is no fee to attend.

An RSVP is required to attend the dinner portion. Please send your RSVP to arts@hyp.org by 10:00 am on February 21st to confirm a seat. All guests are encouraged to bring cash to pay for their tabs. Don’t want to join us for dinner? Feel free to join us afterward for the live performances.
