SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: Challenge Read - “Dune” Book 1
DESCRIPTION:So the ol’ book club is at it again\, with a longer than usual book for a longer than usual time period. Enter the challenge read\, where we’ll have approximately 3 months to read a sci-fi classic\, “Dune” by Frank Herbert. Dune is set on the planet Arrakis\, the story of a boy heir to a noble family that rules an inhospitable desert world. His family is betrayed and destroyed\, sending him on an unimaginable journey\, where he evolves into a man of mystery\, moving mankind toward an unattainable dream. \nBesides it being a classic\, another reason to read Dune is in recognition of the upcoming movie version\, due out in theaters/streaming in late October. If possible\, we’ll fit in a discussion of the movie; the focus will be on the book. \nProgramming note: we’ll be reading the first book of the Dune Chronicles (known as Book 1). The versions we’re seeing are approximately 700 pages\, but can vary based on print size and format (i.e.\, hardcover\, paperback\, kindle). Feel free to e-mail Joe if you have a question about which book to get. To account for the length\, we’re taking approximately 3 months to read and meeting in November. \nRSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “My Favorite Thing is Monsters (Book 1)”
DESCRIPTION:October means Halloween\, and Halloween means something thematic (monsters\, anyone?) for HYP book club. “My Favorite Thing is Monsters” is a graphic novel by Emil Ferris. In it\, 10-year-old Karen Reyes scrawls B-movie horror images while she attempts to solve the murder of her mysterious upstairs neighbor\, a holocaust survivor. In the course of her inquiry\, the reader learns about her neighbor’s life in Nazi Germany. As this investigation unfolds\, we begin to see how the lives around her are interconnected\, in addition to the past and the present. \nTwo programming notes – Amazon lists a second book with additional content\, but we’ll only be reading the first book (hence the Book 1 in the title). In keeping with the Halloween theme\, we’ll be at a ‘mystery location’\, and the address will be sent to those who RSVP. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “State of Wonder”
DESCRIPTION:“State of Wonder”\, by award-winning and bestselling author Anne Patchett\, is the story of pharmacologist Marina Singh\, who journeys to Brazil to bring back information about seemingly miraculous drug research being conducted there by her former teacher. Recalling such books as The Lost City of Z\, and the film “Embrace of the Serpent\,” it’s about choices\, especially the ones we make in the name of discovery\, as well as love. \nThe meeting is planned for outside\, so please plan appropriately\, including chairs\, water\, sunblock\, etc. In the event of rain in the forecast\, Joe will e-mail the zoom link to all RSVP’s the day before. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett
DESCRIPTION:May’s book is “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. It’s about a pair of identical black sisters in the south who run away at 16. One ends up coming back and raising a black daughter in the town she tried to escape; the other passes for white and conceals it from her white husband.\n\nA fixture on critics’ top 10 lists and awards lists\, “The Vanishing Half” is about more than race; it’s about identity\, family\, community\, and the influence of the past on one’s life.\n\nThe meeting is planned for outside\, so please plan appropriately\, including masks\, chairs\, water\, sunblock\, etc. We’ll be wearing masks and spreading out to accommodate social distancing. In the event of rain in the forecast\, Joe will e-mail the zoom link to all RSVP’s the day before. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: "The Queen's Gambit"
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a while since we’ve been to movie theaters\, so it’s been a while since we’ve done a crossover discussion at the ol’ HYP Book Club. March’s book will remedy that with “The Queen’s Gambit” by Walter Tevis. Yes\, THAT Queen’s Gambit. \nAbout a young girl who overcomes a car crash\, the loss of her mother\, and an orphanage to become a chess phenom\, it’s an engrossing tale of genius\, addiction\, connection\, and maybe most of all\, that insular world of chess versus the insular world of her mind. Or vice versa. We’ll be talking about both the book and the TV series\, so feel free to consume in whatever order if you haven’t already. \nHOW TO ATTEND:\nWe’ll meet on Zoom\, and a link will be sent to those who RSVP. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club Book: “Between the World and Me”
DESCRIPTION:February is Black History Month\, and Book Club is reading “Between the World and Me” by the supremely gifted and creative Ta-Nehisi Coates (“Black Panther\,” “We Were Eight Years in Power\,” among others). It’s a long letter to his son about being Black in the United States. It’s also a history lesson combined with Coates’ own experience. The book is short\, but the experience is not. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club Challenge Read – “1Q84”
DESCRIPTION:Every so often\, we at the ol’ book club like to dig into something a little bit bigger than a monthly book. Okay\, a lot bigger. So we came up with the challenge read\, whereby we read a much longer work over the course of six months. Although we’ll be checking in from time-to-time at regular meetings\, it’s a separate undertaking. Note the July meeting date! Our next challenge read is “1Q84” by the venerated Japanese writer Haruki Murakami\, whom we’ve been individually meaning to read for some time. It’s about a young woman who begins to notice discrepancies in the world around her and an aspiring writer whose life begins to unravel after taking on an unusual project. Over the course of the novel\, their narratives intertwine and connect and we get to read all about it. There’s a link to a fuller description below. \nWe’ll meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \nGoodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10357575-1q84?ac=1&from_search=true

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Everything I Never Told You”
DESCRIPTION:The time is the 1970s; the place\, small-town Ohio. Two Chinese American parents are determined that their favorite daughter fulfill the dreams they couldn’t pursue.  But she’s found dead in the local lake\, and the bonds that were keeping the family together are suddenly frayed. “Everything I Never Told You\,” by Celeste Ng\, is a part family portrait\, part quest for understanding\, and a fully gripping read. Please join us as we read this New York Times bestseller and former Amazon Best Book of the Year. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \nProgramming Note: In addition\, we’re starting another challenge read. The challenge read is a separate book adventure\, whereby we pick a (much) longer book than usual and read it over 6 months\, periodically checking in at regular meetings. In the end\, we’ll have a separate stand-alone meeting to discuss that book. The book is Haruki Marukami’s “1Q84.” The challenge read runs from January to June\, and we’ll meet on July 14. There will be a separate posting for the challenge read\, but feel free to e-mail Joe at joefoner1@gmail.com or check the HYP web site for further details.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Ender’s Game”
DESCRIPTION:Continuing with the theme of young protagonists\, February’s book is Ender’s Game\, the celebrated sci-fi story by Orson Scott Card. In a future where parents are typically allowed two children\, and the world is constantly in peril from the threat of an alien force\, a new type of military mind is needed. Enter “Ender” (real name Andrew)\, a third child\, who at age six\, has to start military training\, all the while moderating aggressiveness with mercy. \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Book Thief”
DESCRIPTION:It’s a new year\, so book club is doing something new – reading off a list on Goodreads (well\, for at least our first two books). \nThe topic is adult fiction with young protagonists/point of view\, and the book is “The Book Thief\,” Markus Zusak’s beloved story about a girl in 1939 Nazi Germany who begins a love affair with books and language. She finds a book by accident in the snow and is so taken that she begins to ‘borrow’ books wherever she can find them. But then a stranger arrives on her family’s doorstep\, and the family must hide him\, and everything changes. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \nProgramming Note: In addition\, we’re starting another challenge read. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: Movie and Book discussion – “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”
DESCRIPTION:You’ve probably heard of the Millenium series by Stieg Larssen (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”); Larssen had planned more novels but died after the third one\, and the series was picked up by the publisher’s and family’s choice\, David Lagercrantz.  There’s an upcoming film starring Claire Foy\, so it’s an opportunity to compare the book and movie. It’s also a chance to dig back into the series. \nWe’ll meet at the Harrisburg East Mall Regal Cinema at the show closest to noon. Be sure to check the event page on facebook for updates or theater website for times; there’ll be confirmation for those who RSVP in time. Then we’ll meet briefly after the movie and head to the back room of the Midtown Scholar.  That discussion should start around 3. \nPlease RSVP and send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  Please state in RSVP whether it’s for the movie\, the discussion\, or both. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Outsider”
DESCRIPTION:October means Halloween\, so we’re reading the latest from the spook-master himself\, Stephen King. In the “Outsider\,” a young boy’s corpse is found in a town park. The suspect is a popular little league coach and father of two girls. The case seems ironclad\, but the suspect has an alibi. What’s going on here? As the investigation evolves\, there are some surprising – and horrifying – answers…  We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Kindred”
DESCRIPTION:One thing we can say for sure at the HYP Book Club is that we’ve never read an African-American female sci-fi author. Since we like to take the road less traveled\, we’re going to remedy that this month\, with “Kindred” by the renowned Octavia Butler. It’s about a young African-American writer\, who somehow travels back and forth between her present-day LA home and a pre-Civil War Maryland plantation\, meeting her ancestors\, and becoming more and more involved in their lives the more she goes back. Although it’s categorized as sci-fi\, Butler herself has talked about how “Kindred” crosses boundaries\, calling it a “kind of grim fantasy.”   \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Plot Against America”
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the recent passing of Philip Roth\, we’re reading one of his lesser-known works\, “The Plot Against America.” Imagine an America where famed aviator Charles Lindbergh becomes president and America stays out of WWII\, and a cordial “understanding” is negotiated with Nazi Germany. But Roth goes beyond typical dystopia in playing out the impact on his teenage self and his family in his trademark intensely autobiographical style. Although the book is a good companion piece for fans of Phillip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle” and the lesser-known “Focus” by Arthur Miller\, it has some eerie parallels to the present. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com. See you there\, and happy reading!

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club Challenge Read - “Infinite Jest”
DESCRIPTION:Another HYP Book Club first: The Challenge Read! We pick a super-lengthy book with an interesting premise and take 6 months to read it. Then we meet at the end of the six months and talk not just about the book\, but the experience. The honor of being the first-ever challenge read goes to… \n“Infinite Jest\,” by the acclaimed (and sadly departed) author\, social observer/critic\, and generally enigmatic dude\, David Foster Wallace. Here’s something from the back cover to give you an idea – “Infinite Jest is the name of a movie said to be so entertaining that anyone who watches it loses all desire to do anything but watch it. People die happily\, viewing it in endless repetition.”At nearly 1100 pages\, it’s an epic tale about something as American as apple pie (it’s even in the Declaration of Independence) – the pursuit of happiness…as a by-way to a discussion about the human condition and our need for connection (or lack thereof?). \nWe start reading now\, and on July 22\, we’ll meet at 2:00 in the back room of the Midtown Scholar. Please contact Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com to RSVP or for questions. \nAre you up for the challenge? \nPLEASE NOTE: this is in addition to our regular monthly read!!! \nGoodreads link

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Heart of Darkness”
DESCRIPTION:On its surface\, “Heart of Darkness” is a tale about a river journey to hunt down the chief of an inner station of a trading company deep in the jungle. But the novella that inspired the movie “Apocalypse Now” is much deeper\, a foray into a meditation on the good and evil of mankind\, with characters who are clearly not one or the other. Join us to discuss Joseph Conrad’s classic story of morality that sits right alongside “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\,” “The Picture of Dorian Gray\,” and “The Turn of the Screw.”   \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading!

We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \n***Special Note: We’re in the middle of a six-month challenge read\, whereby we pick a lengthy book (1\,000 or more pages) and take six months to read it. The book is “Infinite Jest\,” and we’ll be meeting to discuss on July 22.  There’s still time to try it! If interested\, please e-mail Joe at the above e-mail.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “And Then There Were None”
DESCRIPTION:The winter is a great time for armchair mysteries\, so we’re starting the new year out right with a classic by Agatha Christie\, “And Then There Were None.” It’s considered by the author herself to be her most difficult book to write\, and it’s one of the all-time best-selling books\, with over 100 million copies sold! It’s a classic “locked-room” mystery whereby a group of people with murder in their past are invited to a secluded island…and start to drop one by one. Who’s killing them? We’ll discuss it in January. \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com. See you there\, and happy reading! \n***Special Note: We’re also starting a six-month challenge read\, whereby we pick a lengthy book (1\,000 or more pages) and take six months to read it. We’ll be picking the book at January’s meeting\, and will be discussing the book in mid- to late July 2018. If interested\, please e-mail Joe at the above e-mail.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Great Divorce”
DESCRIPTION:As a bookend to last month’s book (a discussion of ghosts and the hereafter in “Lincoln in the Bardo”)\, this month we’re reading “The Great Divorce” by C.S. Lewis. You may have heard of him as the author of the beloved “Narnia” series\, but Lewis’ bread and butter was theological writing and storytelling. “The Great Divorce” is a story and a reflection on conceptions of heaven and hell\, told through a story that draws on the works of some great philosophers and authors (St. Augustine\, Dante Aligheri\, John Milton\, and Lewis Carroll). The title itself refers to a William Blake poem. Just the kind of light stuff we like over the holidays! We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com. See you there\, and happy reading!

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Station Eleven”
DESCRIPTION:July’s book is Station Eleven\, by Emily St. John Mandel. The description from Goodreads.com is so great we’ll use that one (edited for brevity): “One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later\, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor’s early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future\, when a theater troupe known as The Travelling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor\, the man who tried to save him\, the actor’s first wife\, his oldest friend\, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony\, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us\, the ephemeral nature of fame\, and the beauty of the world as we know it.” \nWe’ll meet at the Midtown Scholar at 2:00 in the lobby – look for folks carrying copies of the book; then we’ll find a table.
