SUMMARY:HYP Book Club "In Cold Blood"
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn November 15\, 1959\, in the small town of Holcomb\, Kansas\, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime\, and there were almost no clues.\n\n\nWith his groundbreaking nonfiction novel\, “In Cold Blood”\, author Truman Capote vividly reconstructs these tragic events in a work that would give birth to the True Crime genre. Join the HYP Book Club for their March meeting to discuss this seminal classic.\n\n\nWe’ll be meeting at Good Brotha’s Book Cafe.\n\n\nPlease RSVP and/or send questions to Dave Beaver

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Slaughterhouse-Five”
DESCRIPTION:For our April meeting the HYP Book Club becomes unstuck in time as we follow the life of Billy Pilgrim from the Dresden firebombing during World War II to the far off planet of Tralfamador in Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five”. Based on his own experience as a POW\, Vonnegut crafted a science fiction infused anti-war novel that is equal parts tragic and hilarious. Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time\, it remains as impactful now as the day it was written. Join us for our discussion.\n\nWe’ll be meeting at the East Shore Area Library in Meeting Room B.\n\nPlease RSVP and/or send questions to Dave Beaver

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Picture of Dorian Gray”
DESCRIPTION:May’s book is “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. One of literature’s most well known and influential gothic novels. The book caused a scandal upon its release and nearly resulted in its author being prosecuted for violation of laws guarding public morality. The story follows young aristocrat\, Dorian Gray\, as he pursues every hedonistic pleasure that life has to offer. Shielded from the ill effects by a magical portrait which slowly erodes to show the moral disintegration of its subject. Give into temptation and join the HYP Book Club for our discussion.\n\nWe’ll be meeting at Good Brotha’s Book Cafe.\n\nPlease RSVP HERE\n\nQuestions? Email Dave Beaver.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Post-Traumatic”
DESCRIPTION:For our June meeting the HYP Book Club is joined by Stefan Hawkins\, owner of Good Brotha’s Book Café\, and 2021 HYP Business of the Year recipient\, who also selected this month’s novel\, “Post-Traumatic” by Chantal V. Johnson.  \nTo the outside observer\, Vivian is a success story—a dedicated lawyer who advocates for mentally ill patients at a New York City psychiatric hospital. Privately\, Vivian contends with the memories and aftereffects of her bad childhood—compounded by the everyday stresses of being a Black Latinx woman in America. She lives in a constant state of hypervigilant awareness that makes even a simple subway ride into a heart-pounding drama.  \nFor years\, Vivian has self-medicated with a mix of dating\, dieting\, dark humor and smoking weed with her BFF\, Jane. But after a family reunion prompts Vivian to take a bold step\, she finds herself alone in new and terrifying ways\, without even Jane to confide in\, and she starts to unravel. Will she find a way to repair what matters most to her?  \nA debut from a stunning talent\, Post-traumatic is a new kind of survivor narrative\, featuring a complex heroine who is blazingly\, indelibly alive. With razor-sharp prose and mordant wit\, Chantal V. Johnson performs an extraordinary feat\, delivering a psychologically astute story about the aftermath of trauma. \nPlease register here.
