DESCRIPTION:October means Halloween\, and Halloween means something thematic (monsters\, anyone?) for HYP book club. “My Favorite Thing is Monsters” is a graphic novel by Emil Ferris. In it\, 10-year-old Karen Reyes scrawls B-movie horror images while she attempts to solve the murder of her mysterious upstairs neighbor\, a holocaust survivor. In the course of her inquiry\, the reader learns about her neighbor’s life in Nazi Germany. As this investigation unfolds\, we begin to see how the lives around her are interconnected\, in addition to the past and the present. \nTwo programming notes – Amazon lists a second book with additional content\, but we’ll only be reading the first book (hence the Book 1 in the title). DESCRIPTION:So the ol’ book club is at it again\, with a longer than usual book for a longer than usual time period. Enter the challenge read\, where we’ll have approximately 3 months to read a sci-fi classic\, “Dune” by Frank Herbert. Dune is set on the planet Arrakis\, the story of a boy heir to a noble family that rules an inhospitable desert world. His family is betrayed and destroyed\, sending him on an unimaginable journey\, where he evolves into a man of mystery\, moving mankind toward an unattainable dream. \nBesides it being a classic\, another reason to read Dune is in recognition of the upcoming movie version\, due out in theaters/streaming in late October. If possible\, we’ll fit in a discussion of the movie; the focus will be on the book. \nProgramming note: we’ll be reading the first book of the Dune Chronicles (known as Book 1). The versions we’re seeing are approximately 700 pages\, but can vary based on print size and format (i.e.\, hardcover\, paperback\, kindle). DESCRIPTION:Join Harrisburg Young Professionals for our Ugly Sweater Holiday Social on Friday\, December 10th at Level 2 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. We will be celebrating the Holiday Season with light appetizers and a cash bar will be available for any drink purchases. Be sure to dress to impress in your holiday worst as there will be a prize for the ugliest sweater. \nDonations will also be collected for the Bethesda Mission and the upcoming winter season. SUMMARY:Gift Wrapping New Member Social at the YWCA
DESCRIPTION:Dust off your favorite holiday sweater\, and kick off the holiday season by drinking hot cocoa\, eating cookies\, and helping wrap gifts for those in need! Join HYP and the YWCA to jump-start the holiday season at the December New Member Social on December 15th from 5:00-8:00 pm. There will be a short introduction at 5:30 with gift wrapping to begin at 5:45pm. We will also be collecting new\, unused blankets and teddy bears to donate to children who will be spending their holidays at Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. Due to COVID hospitals cannot accept gently used items\, so please be sure these items have original tags and a receipt taped to them. \nThere will be plenty of opportunities to mingle with new and current members of HYP\, and learn just what HYP is all about! SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Hopscotch”
DESCRIPTION:December’s book is “Hopscotch” by Julio Cortazar\, the Argentinian-French writer who was one of the founders of the “Latin American Boom” in the 60s and 70s. Hopscotch is several novels within a novel; in it\, the reader can read a set of chapters in the conventional order\, or ‘hospcotch’ from one chapter to another in a fashion prescribed by the writer. There are also other ways found by other readers\, but no matter which way the chapters are read\, the story makes sense\, and this is its brilliance. Hopscotch typifies one of the best things about reading Cortazar\, his big artistic swings and experimentation with structure. \n***Special programming note 1: Feel free to research alternative methods to read online\, or determine which method you’ll use when you get the book. Please communicate which way you’ll read it when you RSVP. The cool thing about this book is that it can be read in many different ways and we can talk about the experience of each of us reading it in different ways\, literally and figuratively. In the spirit of the book\, see the next note as to why the book was picked 🙂 \n****Special programming note 2: This is Joe Foner’s last meeting as the leader/organizer\, so this meeting will be held at a secret location\, which will be revealed when you RSVP. Julio Cortazar is one of his favorite all-time writers and a big influence in how he thinks about reading\, writing\, and talking about both.
