DESCRIPTION:*The registration fee for this event is $10*\n*This event is limited to HYP members only*\n\nOur PA Food Bank Challenge test in May was such a success we decided to continue our partnership with the PA Food Bank!\n\nNot only will we be helping assemble their care packages that get sent out to those in need in our community\, but the registration fees will all be donated to the PA Food Bank. HYP will hold a team of 20 members\, and we are working on getting another team created by another organization to go against.\n\nBoth teams will have an hour to pack as many of the PA Food Bank care packages as they can.\nWe will be having another challenge in November so if we fill up spots when you sign up we will be sure to give you first dibs for the November date.\n\nAfter the November challenge we will see who from the August challenge and November challenge packed the most boxes. DESCRIPTION:August’s book is White Teeth\, by the acclaimed author Zadie Smith. It’s about the unlikely friendship (in later lives) of two hapless World War II vets – Samad Iqbal (from Bangladesh) and Archie Jones (from England). Through a look-in on their lives and the lives of their families\, we get to see Great Britain in the midst of a consequential transformation. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 11th\, HYP and the Appalachian Audubon Society will team up to help during Wildwood’s Volunteer Work Day and enjoy a beautiful bird walk along the path at Wildwood. The bird walk\, guided by the Appalachian Audubon Society\, will begin at 8:30 AM outside the Olewine Nature Center. We will enjoy the many diverse species of birds often found at the park\, from waterfowl to songbirds. We will then participate in Wildwood’s Volunteer Work Day from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Gift cards to grocery store\, Walmart/Target\, and  chewy.com\n\nDonations are not required but are greatly appreciated.\n\nA  program of Keystone Human Services\, Susquehanna Service Dogs breeds\, raises\, trains\, and places service dogs and hearing dogs\, as well as facility dogs\, to assist children and adults with disabilities to lead the lives they want to live. Founded in 1993\, they have placed over 350 assistance dogs throughout Pennsylvania and the surrounding states.\n\nCome get your puppy fix and enjoy a Zeroday brew and nachos from la Catrina\, their onsite Mexican kitchen.\n\nNot a member yet? SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “My Favorite Thing is Monsters (Book 1)”
DESCRIPTION:October means Halloween\, and Halloween means something thematic (monsters\, anyone?) for HYP book club. “My Favorite Thing is Monsters” is a graphic novel by Emil Ferris. In it\, 10-year-old Karen Reyes scrawls B-movie horror images while she attempts to solve the murder of her mysterious upstairs neighbor\, a holocaust survivor. In the course of her inquiry\, the reader learns about her neighbor’s life in Nazi Germany. As this investigation unfolds\, we begin to see how the lives around her are interconnected\, in addition to the past and the present. \nTwo programming notes – Amazon lists a second book with additional content\, but we’ll only be reading the first book (hence the Book 1 in the title). DESCRIPTION:This is the last PA Food Bank Challenge of 2021. We will have an HYP team of 20 people max to go against the Junior League of Harrisburg’s team. Winning team will get to take home the PA Food Bank pottery bowl trophy until the end of next year when we announce the 2022 winning team. This challenge helps the PA Food Bank assemble their care packages that get sent out to those in need in our community.
