SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Book Thief”
DESCRIPTION:It’s a new year\, so book club is doing something new – reading off a list on Goodreads (well\, for at least our first two books). \nThe topic is adult fiction with young protagonists/point of view\, and the book is “The Book Thief\,” Markus Zusak’s beloved story about a girl in 1939 Nazi Germany who begins a love affair with books and language. She finds a book by accident in the snow and is so taken that she begins to ‘borrow’ books wherever she can find them. But then a stranger arrives on her family’s doorstep\, and the family must hide him\, and everything changes. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \nProgramming Note: In addition\, we’re starting another challenge read. The challenge read is a separate book adventure\, whereby we pick a (much) longer book than usual and read it over 6 months\, periodically checking in at regular meetings. In the end\, we’ll have a separate stand-alone meeting to discuss that book. The book is Haruki Marukami’s “1Q84.” The challenge read runs from January to June\, and we’ll meet in July TBD. There will be a separate posting for the challenge read\, but feel free to e-mail Joe at joefoner1@gmail.com for further details.

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Personal Branding
DESCRIPTION:What do Nike\, Gucci\, and McDonald’s have in common? They all have a strong brand. Marketing is not exclusive to companies and celebrities. Everyone is capable of developing a strong personal brand. What is your mission statement? What is your vision? How do you represent yourself online and in person? Finding answers to these questions and incorporating them into your professional and personal life is key to perfecting your brand. \nJason Klock\, the founder of Klock Entertainment\, has mastered not only the brand of his company but his own. \nJason has created a strong brand based on an extremely high level of customer service\, the experience that is provided to clients from the moment of inquiry through the end of the event\, and the ability to embrace the use of technology to help clients achieve their vision stress-free. His company’s success has been translated to countless awards including Central Penn Business Journal’s Top 50 Fastest Growing 2018\, and Harrisburg Magazine’s Simply the Best four years in the row. Jason himself won Harrisburg Regional Chamber Entrepreneur of The Year in 2018. \nLearn what it takes to develop your personal brand and what it takes to live it every day. \nPlease email us at pr@hyp.org if you have any questions!

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “If Beale Street Could Talk”
DESCRIPTION:For anyone who’s read his work or seen his interviews (most recently in the stellar documentary\, “I Am Not Your Negro”)\, you know what an important and inspiring writer (and human being) James Baldwin was and is. So now we get to read his book\, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” It’s about a young African-American couple\, their love for each other\, their families\, and an injustice that tears them apart and tests their commitment. The book was recently adapted into the stellar (and criminally under-nominated for the Oscars) movie of the same name – go see it if you’re able. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. \nPlease RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com. The book is Haruki Marukami’s “1Q84.” The challenge read runs from January to June\, and we’ll meet on July 14. There will be a separate posting for the challenge read\, but feel free to e-mail Joe at joefoner1@gmail.com or check the HYP web site for further details.
