SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Lincoln in the Bardo”
DESCRIPTION:November’s book is “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders.  A National Book Award Finalist and NY Times bestseller\, it’s a look at Lincoln like no other; mourning the death of his beloved son Willie\, and spending a night visiting with old ghosts both recently and long ago departed.  All of these ghosts have unique voices\, and something to say to old Abe.  And it’s likely they’ll have something to say to us.   We’ll meet at the Midtown Scholar at 2:00 in the lobby – look for folks carrying copies of the books; then we’ll find a table in the back room.  Please contact Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com to RSVP or for questions.  Hope to see you there\, and happy reading! \nGoodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29906980-lincoln-in-the-bardo

SUMMARY:HYP Movie Night - “Lady Bird”
DESCRIPTION:Movie night is back! And just in time for the rush of excellent independent films in the fall\, we’re seeing “Lady Bird\,” which stars Saoirse Ronan (“Atonement\,” “Brooklyn”) as a teenager living in Northern California for a year. \nThe film also stars Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) as her ‘difficult’ mother\, and is loosely autobiographical for first-time director (but long-time indie star/writer) Greta Gerwig (“Greenberg\,” “Frances Ha\,” “Mistress America”). It’s sure to be in the awards discussion come February! We’ll be meeting in the lobby about 7\, as movies typically start between 7 and 8 – be sure to look for screen times on the midtown cinema website: www.midtowncinema.com.  If the movie ends up being scheduled at a much different time\, look for updates on the Facebook event page. \nRSVP and questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “The Great Divorce”
DESCRIPTION:As a bookend to last month’s book (a discussion of ghosts and the hereafter in “Lincoln in the Bardo”)\, this month we’re reading “The Great Divorce” by C.S. Lewis. You may have heard of him as the author of the beloved “Narnia” series\, but Lewis’ bread and butter was theological writing and storytelling. “The Great Divorce” is a story and a reflection on conceptions of heaven and hell\, told through a story that draws on the works of some great philosophers and authors (St. Augustine\, Dante Aligheri\, John Milton\, and Lewis Carroll). The title itself refers to a William Blake poem. Just the kind of light stuff we like over the holidays! We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com. See you there\, and happy reading!
