SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “If Beale Street Could Talk”
DESCRIPTION:For anyone who’s read his work or seen his interviews (most recently in the stellar documentary\, “I Am Not Your Negro”)\, you know what an important and inspiring writer (and human being) James Baldwin was and is. So now we get to read his book\, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” It’s about a young African-American couple\, their love for each other\, their families\, and an injustice that tears them apart and tests their commitment. The book was recently adapted into the stellar (and criminally under-nominated for the Oscars) movie of the same name – go see it if you’re able. We meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. \nPlease RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading! \nProgramming Note: In addition\, we’re starting another challenge read. The challenge read is a separate book adventure\, whereby we pick a (much) longer book than usual and read it over 6 months\, periodically checking in at regular meetings. In the end\, we’ll have a separate stand-alone meeting to discuss that book. The book is Haruki Marukami’s “1Q84.” The challenge read runs from January to June\, and we’ll meet on July 14. There will be a separate posting for the challenge read\, but feel free to e-mail Joe at joefoner1@gmail.com or check the HYP web site for further details.

SUMMARY:Professional Development: Networking
DESCRIPTION:Networking – the professional relationship building action we love\, but sometimes hate doing. There is an art to building a valuable network that can help you throughout your career. With social platforms\, like LinkedIn\, Facebook\, and even Bumble Biz\, building your network has never been easier. Even with all these tools at our disposal\, what does networking really mean and how do we do it? \nRubina Azizdin was asking those same questions. Through her experience in career services in high education\, and now as the Director of Director of STEM UP Network at Harrisburg University\, Azizdin had to master purposeful networking. During our March Professional Development workshop\, Azizdin will talk about her journey in networking\, what it takes to build a meaningful network\, and how to build self-confidence to really shine while you network. \nRubina has over a decade of experience in counseling\, teaching and community engagement. She presently serves as the Director of STEM-UP Network for Harrisburg University\, which is a program that helps advance women in their fields of STEM. She is an avid advocate of diversity and all initiatives that involve empowering women. She is the founder of R.E.A.L. Women’s Alliance Networking Group. She was awarded the West Shore Chamber’s Luminary Shining Star Award\, The Ella Frazier Award and Women of Excellence Award through the YWCA. She also was a recipient of the Global Torch Award through the YWCA\, and was just recently named a Women of Influence and was a recipient of the Forty and 40 awards through the Central Penn Business Journal. Her work and love for the community have been featured in Susquehanna Style Magazine and the Central Penn Business Journal Women in Leadership Publication and Color Magazine. \nPlease email us at pr@hyp.org if you have any questions!

SUMMARY:How It's Built in the 'Burg
DESCRIPTION:This year HYP is teaming up with Startup and TheBurg to host the second year of our series\, How Its Built in the Burg. Other than Hershey’s Ice Cream\, the selection was limited. He sought to bring his family’s tradition here to Harrisburg and revive the traditional way of making ice cream but make it more fun. His journey does not stop there. Come hear the full story and be a part of the How It’s Built in the ‘Burg experience. \n\nIf you have questions\, contact development@hyp.org. \n\nTitle Sponsor:\n \n  \nMedia Partners:

SUMMARY:First Hike of 2019 - Hawk Rock Overlook and Appalachian Trail
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a fun hike! HYP hikes will vary in difficulty level\, so please take note of each hike’s difficulty level and plan accordingly. We will meet at the City Island parking lot next to the parking garage at 10 am for a carpool to Hawk Rock in Duncannon. You may also meet us there- we expect the carpoolers to arrive around 10:30/10:45. If meeting at Hawk Rock please ask Amy Moore for a google pin or specific directions as there is no “address” for the parking lot. \nRSVP is strongly recommended so that you can be notified if hike must be canceled due to inclement weather.\nRSVP by March 29\, 2019\, by emailing AmyMoore@howardhanna.com \n  \nHike details- \n\nLength: Appx. 5 miles total\nType: Out and back\nDifficulty: Moderate (see description below)\nDescription: About 650 feet of elevation gain in the first .7 miles. Once we get up the mountain there will be a nice overlook to enjoy. We will then hit the AT (Appalachian Trail) and the rest of the hike will be a fairly level trail through the woods.\n\nRemember to bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots (recommended but not required) or durable sneakers. Leashed dogs are welcome! \nOptional- trekking poles\, sunscreen\, snacks \n\nEasiest – Suitable for those in fair condition. Elevation gain of fewer than 200 feet and less than 3 miles total.\nEasy – Suitable for people who have a basic fitness level. Elevation gain of fewer than 400 feet and less than 4 miles total.\nModerate – Reasonably fit hikers who get out at least once a month should be able to do this level. This level would be considered easy for frequent hikers. Elevation gain of 500-1\,000 feet and a maximum distance of 6 miles total.\nChallenging – Regular hiking experience is required to participate in hikes at this level. Elevation gain of more than 1\,000 feet and 6 miles. Combination of significant elevation gain and long distance make this level a challenge for many.\nVery Difficult– Long distances and big elevation gains make this level. High fitness level is required because speed will be important to complete.
