SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Kindred”
DESCRIPTION:One thing we can say for sure at the HYP Book Club is that we’ve never read an African-American female sci-fi author. Since we like to take the road less traveled\, we’re going to remedy that this month\, with “Kindred” by the renowned Octavia Butler. It’s about a young African-American writer\, who somehow travels back and forth between her present-day LA home and a pre-Civil War Maryland plantation\, meeting her ancestors\, and becoming more and more involved in their lives the more she goes back. Although it’s categorized as sci-fi\, Butler herself has talked about how “Kindred” crosses boundaries\, calling it a “kind of grim fantasy.”   \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. The rescue is currently in need of the following donation items; Toys\, Potty Pads\, Harnesses\, Treats\, Flea/Tick Medicine\, and Blankets. Please note that Miffy’s is a vegan animal rescue\, so please no real bones or meat flavored items. Monetary donations will also be accepted and all donations are not required but greatly appreciated. \nMiffy’s Animal Rescue is a Vegan non-profit organization with the mission of rescuing\, rehabilitating and finding permanent\, loving homes for neglected and abused animals. DESCRIPTION:The HYP’s “How It’s Built in the ‘Burg” series is a new program held every other month. The series is based on the popular NPR Podcast “How I Built This” about innovators\, entrepreneurs\, and idealists\, and the stories behind the companies they have built. HYP will pull in local entrepreneurs and business founders from the Central PA Area to share their triumphs\, failures\, serendipity\, and insight. \nGuests are invited to network starting at 6:00 PM with a cash bar and appetizers – interview starts at 7:00 PM. This will be a program that you do not want to miss! \nBrittany Holtz is the Founder of STUDIO B POWER YOGA and STUDIO B UNIVERSITY and the co-creator of Project YES (Yoga\, Empowerment and Self-Esteem training for pre-teen and teenage girls).
