SUMMARY:HYP Book Club – “Heart of Darkness”
DESCRIPTION:On its surface\, “Heart of Darkness” is a tale about a river journey to hunt down the chief of an inner station of a trading company deep in the jungle. But the novella that inspired the movie “Apocalypse Now” is much deeper\, a foray into a meditation on the good and evil of mankind\, with characters who are clearly not one or the other. Join us to discuss Joseph Conrad’s classic story of morality that sits right alongside “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\,” “The Picture of Dorian Gray\,” and “The Turn of the Screw.”   \nWe meet in the back room (behind the children’s section) of the Midtown Scholar. Please RSVP and/or send questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.  See you there\, and happy reading!

SUMMARY:HYP Movie Night - “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”
DESCRIPTION:Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was like the little engine that could – a small local production with no budget\, simple sets\, and a plain-spoken Presbyterian minister\, Fred Rogers\, as a star. But work it did\, because of Fred’s ever-present and compassionate way with children and well\, pretty much everybody. Whether you experienced the show as a kid or not\, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” is a look at this amazing phenomenon with humble roots\, and a chance to re-live it. We’ll be meeting in the lobby about 7:30\, as movies typically start between then and 8 – be sure to look for screen times on the midtown cinema website: www.midtowncinema.com.   \nIf the movie ends up being scheduled at a much different time\, look for updates on the Facebook event page.  RSVP and questions to Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com.

Come to visit each of the refreshment stands the day of the event to see their businesses in action and see their individual marketing strategies come to life.  You know you’ll be hungry and thirsty!!

SUMMARY:Italian Lake Music Series: Sub-Radio
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC’s Sub-Radio makes smart\, danceable pop-rock that’s always expanding its boundaries. The sextet’s high-energy live performances and variety of outstanding vocalists have put them on the map up and down the East Coast. The band’s clean guitars\, dancefloor rhythms\, and powerful vocals have garnered comparisons to established pop-rock acts like Walk The Moon and Two Door Cinema Club. Multiple songs have been recognized in national songwriting competitions\, and Sub-Radio has gigged heavily across the region\, playing at the Cherry Blossom Festival\, LAUNCH\, Celebrate Fairfax\, Dewey Beach Music Conference\, and Firefly 2017. Following the success of their 2016 debut Same Train//Different Station\, the band embarked on a series of monthly singles from April to September 2017. Their upcoming EP Headfirst tackles the 21st-century struggle to define relationships and find a community from the high-energy\, often goofy perspective the band’s fans have to come to expect. \n**These concerts are FREE and open to the community! So\, grab a lawn chair\, picnic blanket\, and snacks and join us for our Italian Lake Music Series Opener. This concert is the 3rd of 5 concerts this summer!** \nThis Event is sponsored by: \n \nThank you to our other series Sponsors: \nDauphin County\, Enders Insurance\, TheBURG Magazine\, Capital Blue Cross\, Na’Toria Marketing & Design\, and Midtown Cinema.

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club Challenge Read - “Infinite Jest”
DESCRIPTION:Another HYP Book Club first: The Challenge Read! We pick a super-lengthy book with an interesting premise and take 6 months to read it. Then we meet at the end of the six months and talk not just about the book\, but the experience. The honor of being the first-ever challenge read goes to… \n“Infinite Jest\,” by the acclaimed (and sadly departed) author\, social observer/critic\, and generally enigmatic dude\, David Foster Wallace. Here’s something from the back cover to give you an idea – “Infinite Jest is the name of a movie said to be so entertaining that anyone who watches it loses all desire to do anything but watch it. People die happily\, viewing it in endless repetition.”At nearly 1100 pages\, it’s an epic tale about something as American as apple pie (it’s even in the Declaration of Independence) – the pursuit of happiness…as a by-way to a discussion about the human condition and our need for connection (or lack thereof?). \nWe start reading now\, and on July 22\, we’ll meet at 2:00 in the back room of the Midtown Scholar. Please contact Joe Foner at joefoner1@gmail.com to RSVP or for questions. \nAre you up for the challenge? \nPLEASE NOTE: this is in addition to our regular monthly read!!! \nGoodreads link

SUMMARY:Italian Lake Music Series: Run the Willow
DESCRIPTION:While spending their first 3 years crafting their recent debut\, Run the Willow has developed a unique blend of earthy instrumentation and angelic harmonies that hinge around a profound\, yet simple lyrics. Composed as a 6-piece\, the band’s singer-songwriter style songs carry the dynamic qualities of classical chamber music\, the textures and tones of indie rock\, the impactful lyrics of traditional folk\, and soulful melodies/harmonies delivered by Vince Bruinsma and Rebekah Foster. Their album\, ‘A Living Dichotomy’ ranges from full and powerful songs to careful and sudden arrangements dealing with a duality in most of us—a desire to settle and invest in a community versus satiating a wanderlust and desire to roam. \n**These concerts are FREE and open to the community! So\, grab a lawn chair\, picnic blanket\, and snacks and join us for our Italian Lake Music Series Opener. This concert is the 4th of 5 concerts this summer!** \nThis Event is sponsored by: \n  \n \nThank you to our other series Sponsors: \nEnders Insurance\, Dixon University Center\, TheBURG Magazine\, Capital Blue Cross\, Na’Toria Marketing & Design\, and Midtown Cinema.
