SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: Selected Horror Stories of H.P. Lovecraft
DESCRIPTION:“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear\, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” In the spirit of the Halloween season\, the HYP Book Club will be reading a collection of short stories from the master of cosmic horror\, H. P. Lovecraft. The following stories will be discussed: \nDagon\, Nyarlathotep\, The Call of Cthulhu\, The Color Out of Space\, The Dunwich Horror\, The Whisperer in Darkness\, At the Mountains of Madness\, The Shadow Over Innsmouth\, The Dreams in the Witch House\, and The Shadow Out of Time \nThese stories are all in the public domain and can easily be found for free here. \nContent Warning: These stories were published between 1923 and 1936 and in some cases contain outdated and racist language. While these ideas are not the focus of the stories\, we still wanted to make potential readers aware of their inclusion. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Moral Ambition”
DESCRIPTION:This month\, the HYP Book Club is reading ‘Moral Ambition’ from international bestselling author Rutger Bregman. Here he reveals how our conventional definitions of success are harming us and the planet\, and shows how we can shift the focus from personal gain to societal benefit. In the process\, he explains\, we will join a growing movement of pioneers who are already living out this ethos. They’re the builders\, the problem-solvers\, the doers who have chosen a path less traveled. A guidebook to finding that path for ourselves\, Moral Ambition reminds us that the real measure of success lies not in what we accumulate but in what we contribute\, and shows how we\, too\, can build a legacy that truly matters. \nThis event requires registration. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Brave New World”
DESCRIPTION:Join the HYP Book Club for our discussion of ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley. A profoundly important classic of world literature\, Brave New World is a searching vision of an unequal\, technologically-advanced future where humans are genetically bred\, socially indoctrinated\, and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively uphold an authoritarian ruling order–all at the cost of our freedom\, full humanity\, and perhaps also our souls. Written in the shadow of the rise of fascism during the 1930s\, Brave New World likewise speaks to a 21st-century world dominated by mass-entertainment\, technology\, medicine and pharmaceuticals\, the arts of persuasion\, and the hidden influence of elites. \nWhy did we choose to read this book now? No reason in particular. Why do you ask? \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club is reading ‘The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality’ by Amanda Montell\, a delicious blend of cultural criticism and personal narrative that explores our cognitive biases and the power\, disadvantages\, and highlights of magical thinking. \nIn a series of razor-sharp\, deeply funny chapters\, Montell delves into a cornucopia of the cognitive biases that run rampant in our brains\, from how the “halo effect” cultivates worship (and hatred) of larger-than-life celebrities\, to how the “sunk cost fallacy” can keep us in detrimental relationships long after we’ve realized they’re not serving us. \nCome join us for what will undoubtedly be a mind-altering conversation \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Project Hail Mary”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club will be reading ‘Project Hail Mary’ from the author of ‘The Martian’\, Andy Weir. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate\, last-chance mission\, and if he fails\, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now\, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name\, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very\, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home\, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead\, his memories fuzzily returning\, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship\, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away\, he’s got to do it all alone. \nOr does he? \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World”
DESCRIPTION:Naomi Klein is one of our most trenchant and influential social critics\, an essential analyst of what branding\, austerity\, and climate profiteering have done to our societies and souls. In her latest work she turns her gaze inwa to our psychic landscapes\, and outward to the possibilities for building hope amid intersecting economic\, medical\, and political crises. With the assistance of Sigmund Freud\, Jordan Peele\, Alfred Hitchcock\, and bell hooks\, among other accomplices\, Klein uses wry humor and a keen sense of the ridiculous to face the strange doubles that haunt us and that have come to feel as intimate and proximate as a warped reflection in the mirror. Join the HYP Book Club as we discuss this provocative new book. \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Color of Law”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club will be reading ‘The Color of Law’ by Richard Rothstein. In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis\, Rothstein\, a leading authority on housing policy\, explodes the myth that America’s cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation—that is\, through individual prejudices\, income differences\, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather\, The Color of Law incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation—the laws and policy decisions passed by local\, state\, and federal governments—that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day. \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Demon Copperhead” Chapters 35-64
DESCRIPTION:Due to this book’s length we will be splitting it January and February. In a plot that never pauses for breath\, relayed in his own unsparing voice\, he braves the modern perils of foster care\, child labor\, derelict schools\, athletic success\, addiction\, disastrous loves\, and crushing losses. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao”
DESCRIPTION:Things have never been easy for Oscar\, a sweet but disastrously overweight\, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. From his home in New Jersey\, where he lives with his old-world mother and rebellious sister\, Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and\, most of all\, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants\, thanks to the Fukœ—the curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations\, dooming them to prison\, torture\, tragic accidents\, and\, above all\, ill-starred love. Oscar\, still waiting for his first kiss\, is just its most recent victim. \nJunot Diaz immerses us in the tumultuous life of Oscar and the history of the family at large\, rendering with genuine warmth and dazzling energy\, humor\, and insight the Dominican-American experience\, and\, ultimately\, the endless human capacity to persevere in the face of heartbreak and loss. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Poverty\, by America”
DESCRIPTION:In his landmark book\, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history\, research\, and original reporting to answer the question of why the United States\, the richest country on earth\, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities\, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets\, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages? \nElegantly written and fiercely argued\, this compassionate book gives us new ways of thinking about amorally urgent problems. It also helps us imagine solutions. Desmond builds a startlingly original and ambitious case for ending poverty. He calls on us all to become poverty abolitionists\, engaged in a politics of collective belonging to usher in a new age of shared prosperity and\, at last\, true freedom. Join the HYP Book Club as we attempt to unpack this groundbreaking work. \nPlease register for the event here!\nSend any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “My Favorite Thing is Monsters Vol. 2”
DESCRIPTION:At last the HYP Book Clue can conclude the story they began in October of 2021 with the long-delayed release of ‘My Favorite Thing is Monsters Vol. 2’ by Emil Ferris. Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ’60s Chicago this graphic novel is presented as the diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes as she tries to solve the murder of her beloved and enigmatic upstairs neighbor\, Anka Silverberg\, a holocaust survivor\, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. All presented in Ferris’s inimitable style that breathtakingly and seamlessly combines panel-to-panel storytelling and cartoon montages filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster mag iconography. It is recommended that participants also read Vol. 1 in order to fully understand the story of Vol. 2 but also because it is simply fantastic. Both volumes are quick reads so do not be intimidated. \nPlease register for the event on Cogran and send any questions\nto Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club is returning to the space with ‘The Moon is a Harsh Mistress’ from the legendary Sci-Fi writer Robert A. Heinlein (‘Starship Troopers’\, ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’). It is a tale of revolution\, of the rebellion of a former penal colony on the Moon against its masters on the Earth. It is a tale of a culture whose family structures are based on the presence of two men for every woman\, leading to novel forms of marriage and family. It is the story of the disparate people\, a computer technician\, a vigorous young female agitator\, and an elderly academic who become the movement’s leaders\, and of Mike\, the supercomputer whose sentience is known only to the revolt’s inner circle\, who for reasons of his own is committed to the revolution’s ultimate success. \nPlease register for the event on Cogran and send any questions\nto Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com
