SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway\, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect\, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who\, for the last fifteen years\, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. \nTogether this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed\, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian\, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan)\, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin\, a paranoid\, brilliant\, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig\, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. \nWhere are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel! \nThis event is free but does require registration to attend. Click here to register. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Jenifer Wright at wright.jenn27@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. In 1972\, when workers in Pottstown\, Pennsylvania\, were digging the foundations for a new housing development\, the last thing they expected to uncover was a human skeleton. Who the skeleton was and how it got buried there were just two of the long-held secrets that had been kept for decades by the residents of Chicken Hill\, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side\, sharing ambitions and sorrows. \nChicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store\, which served the neighborhood’s quirky collection of blacks and European immigrants\, helped by her husband\, Moshe\, a Romanian-born theater owner who integrated the town’s first dance hall. When the state came looking for a deaf black child\, claiming that the boy needed to be institutionalized\, Chicken Hill’s residents—roused by Chona’s kindness and the courage of a local black worker named Nate Timblin—banded together to keep the boy safe. \nAs the novel unfolds\, it becomes clear how much the people of Chicken Hill have to struggle to survive at the margins of white Christian America and how damaging bigotry\, hypocrisy\, and deceit can be to a community. When the truth is revealed about the skeleton\, the boy\, and the part the town’s establishment played in both\, McBride shows that it is love and community—heaven and earth—that ultimately sustain us. \nThis is a free event but does require registration. Click here to register. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Jenifer Wright at wright.jenn27@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor. No matter what you eat\, how much you exercise\, how skinny or young or wise you are\, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. \n\nThere is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in\, let it out\, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. Yet\, as a species\, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly\, with grave consequences. \n\nJournalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs\, as we might expect\, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites\, secret Soviet facilities\, New Jersey choir schools\, and the smoggy streets of Sao Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama\, Sudarshan Kriya\, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe. \n\nModern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring\, asthma\, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible\, and yet it is.Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology\, psychology\, biochemistry\, and human physiology\, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again. \n\nThis is a free event but does require registration. Click here to register! \n\nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to Jenifer Wright at wright.jenn27@gmail.com
