SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. In 1972\, when workers in Pottstown\, Pennsylvania\, were digging the foundations for a new housing development\, the last thing they expected to uncover was a human skeleton. Who the skeleton was and how it got buried there were just two of the long-held secrets that had been kept for decades by the residents of Chicken Hill\, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side\, sharing ambitions and sorrows. \nChicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store\, which served the neighborhood’s quirky collection of blacks and European immigrants\, helped by her husband\, Moshe\, a Romanian-born theater owner who integrated the town’s first dance hall. When the state came looking for a deaf black child\, claiming that the boy needed to be institutionalized\, Chicken Hill’s residents—roused by Chona’s kindness and the courage of a local black worker named Nate Timblin—banded together to keep the boy safe. \nAs the novel unfolds\, it becomes clear how much the people of Chicken Hill have to struggle to survive at the margins of white Christian America and how damaging bigotry\, hypocrisy\, and deceit can be to a community. When the truth is revealed about the skeleton\, the boy\, and the part the town’s establishment played in both\, McBride shows that it is love and community—heaven and earth—that ultimately sustain us. \nThis is a free event but does require registration. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway\, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect\, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who\, for the last fifteen years\, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. \nTogether this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed\, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian\, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan)\, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin\, a paranoid\, brilliant\, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig\, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. \nWhere are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel! \nThis event is free but does require registration to attend. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, February 8\, as we discuss Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time. Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant is intrigued by a portrait of Richard III. Could such a sensitive face actually belong to a heinous villain — a king who killed his brother’s children to secure his crown? SUMMARY:HYP Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly book club. For January\, we’re reading An Edible History of Humanity. More than simply sustenance\, food historically has been a kind of technology\, changing the course of human progress by helping to build empires\, promote industrialization\, and decide the outcomes of wars. \nTom Standage draws on archaeology\, anthropology\, and economics to reveal how food has helped shape and transform societies around the world\, from the emergence of farming in China by 7500 b.c to the use of sugar cane and corn to make ethanol today. An Edible History of Humanity is a fully satisfying account of human history. \nThis event requires registration. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Moral Ambition”
DESCRIPTION:This month\, the HYP Book Club is reading ‘Moral Ambition’ from international bestselling author Rutger Bregman. Here he reveals how our conventional definitions of success are harming us and the planet\, and shows how we can shift the focus from personal gain to societal benefit. In the process\, he explains\, we will join a growing movement of pioneers who are already living out this ethos. They’re the builders\, the problem-solvers\, the doers who have chosen a path less traveled. A guidebook to finding that path for ourselves\, Moral Ambition reminds us that the real measure of success lies not in what we accumulate but in what we contribute\, and shows how we\, too\, can build a legacy that truly matters. \nThis event requires registration. SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Brave New World”
DESCRIPTION:Join the HYP Book Club for our discussion of ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley. A profoundly important classic of world literature\, Brave New World is a searching vision of an unequal\, technologically-advanced future where humans are genetically bred\, socially indoctrinated\, and pharmaceutically anesthetized to passively uphold an authoritarian ruling order–all at the cost of our freedom\, full humanity\, and perhaps also our souls. Written in the shadow of the rise of fascism during the 1930s\, Brave New World likewise speaks to a 21st-century world dominated by mass-entertainment\, technology\, medicine and pharmaceuticals\, the arts of persuasion\, and the hidden influence of elites. \nWhy did we choose to read this book now? SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club is reading ‘The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality’ by Amanda Montell\, a delicious blend of cultural criticism and personal narrative that explores our cognitive biases and the power\, disadvantages\, and highlights of magical thinking. \nIn a series of razor-sharp\, deeply funny chapters\, Montell delves into a cornucopia of the cognitive biases that run rampant in our brains\, from how the “halo effect” cultivates worship (and hatred) of larger-than-life celebrities\, to how the “sunk cost fallacy” can keep us in detrimental relationships long after we’ve realized they’re not serving us. \nCome join us for what will undoubtedly be a mind-altering conversation \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Project Hail Mary”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club will be reading ‘Project Hail Mary’ from the author of ‘The Martian’\, Andy Weir. Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate\, last-chance mission\, and if he fails\, humanity and the earth itself will perish. Except that right now\, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name\, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very\, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home\, with nothing but two corpses for company. His crewmates dead\, his memories fuzzily returning\, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship\, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away\, he’s got to do it all alone. \nOr does he? \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World”
DESCRIPTION:Naomi Klein is one of our most trenchant and influential social critics\, an essential analyst of what branding\, austerity\, and climate profiteering have done to our societies and souls. In her latest work she turns her gaze inwa to our psychic landscapes\, and outward to the possibilities for building hope amid intersecting economic\, medical\, and political crises. With the assistance of Sigmund Freud\, Jordan Peele\, Alfred Hitchcock\, and bell hooks\, among other accomplices\, Klein uses wry humor and a keen sense of the ridiculous to face the strange doubles that haunt us and that have come to feel as intimate and proximate as a warped reflection in the mirror. Join the HYP Book Club as we discuss this provocative new book. \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “The Color of Law”
DESCRIPTION:This month the HYP Book Club will be reading ‘The Color of Law’ by Richard Rothstein. In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis\, Rothstein\, a leading authority on housing policy\, explodes the myth that America’s cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation—that is\, through individual prejudices\, income differences\, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather\, The Color of Law incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation—the laws and policy decisions passed by local\, state\, and federal governments—that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day. \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com

SUMMARY:HYP Book Club: “Demon Copperhead” Chapters 35-64
DESCRIPTION:Due to this book’s length we will be splitting it January and February. For February read chapters 35 through 64. \nSet in the mountains of southern Appalachia\, Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver\, is the story of a boy born to a teenage single mother in a single-wide trailer\, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair\, a caustic wit\, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath\, relayed in his own unsparing voice\, he braves the modern perils of foster care\, child labor\, derelict schools\, athletic success\, addiction\, disastrous loves\, and crushing losses. Through all of it\, he reckon  with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in\nfavor of cities. \nPlease register for the event here and send any questions to Dave Beaver at d4veb3aver@gmail.com
