May’s book is “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. It’s about a pair of identical black sisters in the south who run away at 16. One ends up coming back and raising a black daughter in the town she tried to escape; the other passes for white and conceals it from her white husband.
A fixture on critics’ top 10 lists and awards lists, “The Vanishing Half” is about more than race; it’s about identity, family, community, and the influence of the past on one’s life.
The meeting is planned for outside, so please plan appropriately, including masks, chairs, water, sunblock, etc. We’ll be wearing masks and spreading out to accommodate social distancing.
