This month the HYP Book Club is taking a look at a piece of American history that’s not often discussed with ‘Assata: An Autobiography’ by Assata Shakur. In 1977 Assata Shakur was convicted, based on flimsy evidence, as an accomplice to the murder of a white state trooper. This intensely personal and political autobiography belies the fearsome image of her long projected by the media and the state. With wit and candor, she recounts the experiences that led her to a life of activism and portrays the strengths, weaknesses, and eventual demise of Black and White revolutionary groups at the hand of government officials.
