Sharpen your Diversity Lens: How to Use Your Influence in Your Workplace or Organization.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are more than just buzzwords and Ethnicity checkboxes on forms; they are specific mindsets, behaviors, and actions we can ALL take. In the workplace, it is important to maintain a consistent focus on prioritizing DEIB efforts to strengthen an organization’s culture of belonging. But how can groups make this happen?

In this session, Ali will speak on how to use your influence related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. She will share information on how to get organizations engaged with DEIB-related topics and how to celebrate cultures and raise awareness on topics.

Learning objectives:

  • Define and comprehend what diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging means.
  • Understand the level of commitment related to DEIB efforts.
  • Reflect on how to be your own best advocate and ally for others.
  • Learn how to engage others in the workplace to turn dialogue and intention into action.

About the Presenter

Alixandra (Ali) Moyer is an Integrated Marketing Specialist at Phoenix Contact, a manufacturing company specializing in industrial automation, interconnection, and interface solutions in Middletown, PA. Last year, she joined the newly formed DEIB committee, playing a key role in promoting a culture of belonging across over 80 Phoenix Contact subsidiaries worldwide. In Ali’s previous role, she was a Marketing and Communications Specialist at Penn State Harrisburg for nearly eight years. She served as the co-chair of the college’s Diversity and Educational Equity Committee (DEEC) and was appointed to the newly developed advisory committee titled Council on Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity (CORED) at Penn State Harrisburg. The DEEC aims to foster a safe, supportive campus community that values diversity and good citizenship. In her roles with the DEEC, Ali co-chaired the Public Relations subcommittee for two years and led the entire organization during the 2019-21 academic years. She organized events featuring celebrity keynotes such as Mayim Bialik, Sean Astin and more.

The DEEC, consisting of over 50 faculty, staff, and students, developed numerous educational and professional development programs under her leadership. These programs addressed themes such as mental health, LGBTQ support, cultural celebrations, religious recognition, diversity training, anti-racism fundraising, and partnerships with external community members.

CORED engaged the University’s strategic planning foundation to advance inclusion, equity, and diversity, aligning with the University’s vision to integrate these values into all aspects of university life. As an advisory group member, Ali played an integral role in the recruitment and retention efforts by recommending strategies to better recruit and retain faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented and underserved populations at Penn State Harrisburg.

Ali authored a children’s book titled “Alixandra’s Adoption Announcement,” an autobiography of her childhood adoption journey. The story depicts her frustrations and anxieties as a long- term foster child, culminating in a joyful ending when Elizabeth and Harry Moyer became her adoptive parents on July 29, 1996. The book emphasizes that love transcends color and generations. Ali is also a Board of Directors member for the Aging Out Institute, a national organization that promotes resources and strategies that help individuals and organizations support youth aging out of foster care.

Ali earned a B.A. in Advertising from Penn State University in 2012 and an M.Ed. in Training and Development from Penn State Harrisburg in 2017. She served as VP of Marketing for the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of ATD for two years and has been a member for five years. Her expertise includes advertising, integrated marketing, communications, social media, event planning, customer service training, business administration, and career and organizational development.
