Harrisburg, PA – The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for June 2017:

StoryTime: Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer, Friday, June 2, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Gather with us outside under the trees (weather permitting) to celebrate this year’s PA One Book, Every Young Child featured selection: Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer. StoryTime is our popular read-aloud series for children 3-5 years.  Each read-aloud is held in a gallery or in Curiosity Connection, and is followed by a related play activity or hands-on exploration of artifacts. StoryTime is included with general admission.

Exhibit Opening: Art of the State, Sunday, June 11 at 1:30 PM

Art of the State is an annual juried exhibition that has been showcasing the work of Pennsylvania’s artists at The State Museum of Pennsylvania since 1968. The body of art that has been exhibited reflects half a century of creative endeavor in the Keystone State. Through the years, exhibitors have shared their ideas and engaged viewers in the categories of painting, photography, craft, sculpture, and work on paper.

The 50th annual exhibit opens to the public on Sunday, June 11, with an awards ceremony at 1:30 PM and an opening reception immediately following. Admission to The State Museum will be free that day.

The exhibit runs from June 11 through September 10 and includes 130 works of art by 119 artists from 28 counties. This year’s exhibit attracted nearly 2,200 entries from 845 artists.

Art of the State is co-presented by The State Museum and Jump Street. WITF Public Media and Higher Information Group are exhibit sponsors.

Free Summer Fridays featuring Learn at Lunchtime

Fridays this summer at The State Museum will be free from June 16 through August 25. This program gives our guests free general admission to the museum for the day and features Learn at Lunchtime programs from 12:15 PM to 12:45 PM highlighting a variety of engaging discussions and presentations.

Join us to kick off a special summer series of 3rd in the Burg gatherings at The State Museum of Pennsylvania. Enjoy refreshments and a behind-the-scenes tour of the exciting restoration of Mammal Hall, our famous dioramas of Pennsylvania nature scenes. The State Museum is free during the hours of the event. 3rd in the Burg is Harrisburg’s monthly arts and entertainment celebration. Victorian Dance Ensemble, Sunday, June 18, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

In honor of the Civil War Days in Harrisburg, join us for demonstrations of Victorian dance by The Victorian Dance Ensemble, the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation. Stop by Memorial Hall to explore period costumes, artifacts and dance! Dance demonstrations will occur in Memorial Hall at 1 PM, 2 PM, and 3 PM. General admission to The State Museum is free for the day.

June 2017 Nature Lab

This summer, discover Nature Lab, an interactive, hands-on learning experience guided by specialists in fields ranging from archaeology to environmental protection. Museum curators and representatives of various Pennsylvania state agencies will engage in live educational presentations as they lead visitors of all ages through the rich natural world of Pennsylvania. This program runs on Wednesday and Thursdays, June 21 through August 24 at 11:30 AM.

What are constellations? How were they created? These are just two of the questions answered about these images in the night sky. See what images we find around the globe. Explore each season and find out the basic constellations you can find in the Pennsylvania night sky.

Dark Star Adventure (Pre-K to 2^nd Grade), Friday 10:30 AM

This animated, adventure lets us join Subrah and her friends as they take an unforgettable voyage of discovery.  While finding their way home, you will witness the power of a supernova, explore the heart of a gaseous nebula, visit exotic pulsars, and learn about black holes.

Planetarium shows are $3 per person in addition to general admission. Planetarium admission is free to members of the State Museum Affiliate and the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation.

Weekend Closure: The State Museum of Pennsylvania will be closed for electrical work Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania, adjacent to the State Capitol in Harrisburg, is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. The State Museum offers expansive collections interpreting Pennsylvania’s fascinating heritage. With exhibits examining the dawn of geologic time, the Native American experience, the Colonial and Revolutionary eras, a pivotal Civil War battleground, and the commonwealth’s vast industrial age, The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania’s story is America’s story.

Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  Admission is $7 for adults (ages 12-64), $6 for senior citizens (ages 65 and up), and $5 for children (ages 1-11).

HYP Members, Friends, Partners and Supporters,

I hope everyone is having a happy, healthy and successful 2017. As we enter one of the most important weeks of the year for the organization, I wanted to take a quick look back at some of HYP’s recent accomplishments. In just four months, the 2017 HYP leadership and members have achieved a lot that we should be very proud of, and I’m excited to share. Here are a few of the highlights so far this year.

• Introduced our membership to the Gamut Theatre during our Annual Meeting with over 120 people in attendance.
• Hired a new Sports Coordinator in February who has already made big strides in improving HYP’s Sports leagues while managing record breaking participants in dodgeball, flag football, sand volleyball, bowling, and ultimate frisbee.
• Continued the longstanding tradition of the 19^th Annual Forster Street Clean Up with over 50 volunteers who cleaned, mulched, cut hedges, and planted over 1 million seeds in the Forster Street median in early April.
• Held four successful CEO Roundtables with some of the region’s top leaders.
• Brought together 18 aspiring young professionals and 18 knowledgeable professionals to participate in HYP’s first 6 Degree Networking event as part of HYP’s new Professional Development Series.

An Important Week for HYP

This evening, HYP will have the honor of hosting the second Harrisburg Mayoral Debate at the Harrisburg Hilton. Through this debate, we aim to increase awareness of the opportunities, issues and challenges facing the city of Harrisburg. This event provides HYP with a chance to engage our 2500 members and sports participants, many of whom live in the city and will emerge as future leaders, in the democratic process of selecting our city’s leadership.

Following that event, the 19^th consecutive year for the Harrisburg Young Professional’s Home Tour will be on Saturday. It also represents the first year that the organization will hold this event in the beautiful Harrisburg neighborhood of Bellevue Park. For 19 years, the HYP Home Tour has provided the opportunity to share a unique area of the city to our HYP members, friends, family, and supporters. This year, we are proud to partner with the Bellevue Park Association Board and the Bellevue Park residents to display their iconic homes and beautiful gardens and share the rich history of this part of the city.

Proceeds from the annual Home Tour benefit the HYP Home in the City Program. The Home in the City program generate countless opportunities to create new residents within the city and will help several HYP members purchase their first homes. The program provides $1,000 grants to qualified HYP members purchasing a home in the city of Harrisburg. Through 2016, HYP has granted $50,000+ to HYP members through Home in the City. As HYP, we believe that events such as the Mayoral Debate and the Home Tour serve as a catalyst for continued and sustained growth for Harrisburg and the region. They also provide the opportunity to show why HYP continues to believe that Harrisburg is the ideal place to live, work, play, and retain future leaders.

Looking Ahead

There are so many events to look forward to this season with HYP! Here are just a few to put on your calendar:

• In June, HYP will be continuing our Italian Lake Concert Series with the Jayplayers on June 11.
• We will be welcoming Adam Vasquez, President & CEO of Sacunas, as he speaks at our CEO Roundtable on June 16.
• Happy Hour Socials will be hosted at the Café 1500, Hilton, Bacco, and JB Lovedrafts.
• Registration will be opening soon for HYP’s 5 Miler for 5 Charities race to be held on October 14.
• Finally, we will be kicking off (yes, that’s a pun!) our biggest kickball season yet with three leagues and nearly 60 teams! Yes, there is still time to register your team.

The HYP Board of Directors and I are excited for the rest of 2017 and all the great events that we have planned. I look forward to continue working with the region’s best young professionals. Thank you again for your support and participation and I hope to see you at one of upcoming events soon.

MakerShift is a celebration of Do It Yourself (D.I.Y.) ” makers ” of all ages through out the Capital Region. The event highlights the creative work of amateurs who are tinkering with low-high tech too ls (Eg. Drones, Virtual Reality, 3D printing) to learn an d create for the love of it. This event explores the impact that Science, Technology , Engineering, Arts and Math (S.T.E.A.M.) i s making on 21st Century life and work through a variety of lightning talks and demonstrations.

S .T.E.A.M. is q uickly changing the landscape of education and industry. While the D.I.Y. and Maker Movement has received national attention for how it is transforming life, learning and work it is still largely unknown to the general public. MakerShift aims to both lift up the creativity of Makers in Central PA and shift the collective conversations to more fully explore the impact of
S.T.E .A.M. on 21st Century life and work.

City officials will hold a public meeting to discuss the Reservoir Park Master Plan at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 at Transcend Church, 1801 State St., Harrisburg.

This meeting will involve an in-depth presentation of the draft of the master plan. Public engagement is encouraged to ensure that the final presentation is a product of the community’s ideas and concerns.

Two prior meetings were held in late 2016. The first, was a planning and brainstorming session on October 25. The second, involved discussion and voting on concepts presented in the previous meeting, was held on December 7.

The last meeting will include the final presentation of the Reservoir Park Master Plan, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 19 at 6 p.m., location has yet to be determined.

April 10,​ HARRISBURG, PA ​- The third annual Harrisburg Beer Week will run April 21-29. The event celebrates the local craft beer community while serving as a fundraiser for Harrisburg River Rescue and Emergency Services.

In its first two years, Harrisburg Beer Week facilitated more than 350 events ranging from beer festivals to educational sessions and raised $60,000 for Harrisburg River Rescue and Emergency Services.

This year, the nine-day series has grown to include more than 200 events and weeklong specials and welcomes new participating venues and breweries.

• New locations for signature Harrisburg Beer Week events!​ Harrisburg Beer Week redesigned their official kick-off event and moved it to the Harrisburg Transportation Center (train station). This private, sponsor-only event features live music, beer and food and serves as the official Beer Week kick-off. The group’s homebrew competition, Battle of the Homebrewers,
  also has relocated to the historic Broad Street Market in Midtown Harrisburg. Tickets for Battle are available for $25.

Exclusive Beneficiary, Harrisburg River Rescue & Emergency Services

Harrisburg River Rescue will take part in the celebration once again as Beer Week’s sole beneficiary and will hold an open house at their headquarters during the festivities.

“Being involved in Beer Week has provided us an ongoing relationship with other individuals who share an innovative passion for bettering our city and strengthening support of those local assets that make our city prosper,” said Tony Reigle, Harrisburg River Rescue Lieutenant. Money raised from last year’s Harrisburg Beer Week donation went towards continued renovations of the HHRES headquarters, which is currently underway, said Reigle. The group is still in need of $130,000 to finish Phase 3, which will renovate the group’s hall and training room. Once Phase 2 is completed, HHRES will be able to begin offering free Water Awareness classes, CPR and other training to the community.
