HARRISBURG, Pa. (December 12, 2017) – Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP), a non-profit young professional group, announced today the appointment of Suzanne Patackis as the president of the 2018 executive board for the organization. Patackis is formerly a biologics and joint preservation specialist at Zimmer Biomet Riccione in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She has been a member of HYP for 6 years.

“I am very excited about Suzanne’s new role with our organization,” said Joe Tertel, immediate past-president of HYP, “she has been instrumental in many of our legacy initiatives, including our annual 5 Miler for 5 Charities. As we come upon our 20th anniversary for HYP, she is a great leader to help us make this one of our best years yet.”

Along with Patackis’ appointment, the organization announced the following individuals in their new roles:

Jeremy Scheibelhut, CPA & Manager at Boyer & Ritter LLC, will continue in his role as treasurer for a second year.

Harrisburg, PA (Nov. 9, 2017) – Nominations for the 19th annual Nonprofit Innovation Awards have been reopened! These coveted awards are designed to recognize local nonprofit organizations of all sizes, and their executives, that demonstrate innovation in their daily operations.

An organization can be nominated in one of five categories including: brand identity/unique marketing campaign, collaboration, programs, management operations and nonprofit leadership excellence.

Up to 35 finalists will be selected for recognition. The area’s three community foundations, the Lancaster County Community Foundation, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) and
the York County Community Foundation, will grant the winner and the runner-up of each category a monetary award to continue their organization’s mission.

To be considered, the organization must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

– Nonprofit is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.

– Organization is based in and serves the following counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and/or York. (Statewide nonprofits are not eligible.)

– Innovation was implemented no earlier than January 1, 2015.

– For the executive category, the individual must be the President, CEO, Executive Director or Chairperson for the organization for three years.

Nominations are being accepted online at www.CPBJ.com/events until 5pm on Monday, November 27, 2017. The site also has a downloadable form for submission. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges and finalists will be announced in January 2018. During an awards event on Thursday, April 12, 2018, each finalist’s achievements will be highlighted and the
winners will be revealed.

The 2018 Nonprofit Innovation Awards are the result of a partnership among the Central Penn Business Journal, the Lancaster County Community Foundation, the Foundation for Enhancing

Harrisburg, PA – What do you get when 101 people compete in field day events on behalf of 14 local nonprofit organizations? The Harrisburg Hoopla! Combining fun with philanthropy, this inaugural event raised $5,500 for local nonprofit organizations earlier this month.

The event gave participants a chance to relive memorable middle school days and compete in fun events such as potato sack race, three legged race, tug-o-war, and more. Everyone put aside adulting for the day and supported a great cause with fun events, live music by Big Hoax, and food/beverages from Kona Ice, Arooga’s, Popped Culture, Get Smok’d BBQ, and It’s all Greek to You.

“I had an absolute blast, and really liked how the event brought so many nonprofit organizations together. Can’t wait for next year!” said one participant.

Harrisburg Hoopla is an event of the Emerging Philanthropists Program (EPP), a partnership between The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) and Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP).

Each of the 14 teams that competed represented a local charity of their choice. The top three teams will be donating part of the event proceeds to their selected charity as follows:

The remaining $2,200 will go to the Emerging Philanthropist Program, funding annual grantmaking and next year’s Harrisburg Hoopla event.

The mission for the Harrisburg Hoopla is to unite local businesses, restaurants, and nonprofits to support the local economy and raise awareness and support local nonprofit organizations; all while having fun! EPP cares about our community. Together we can continue to make the Harrisburg region a great place to live, work and play.

The goal of Harrisburg Hoopla is to unite the local community, boost our economy, and raise money for local nonprofit organizations through friendly track and field competitions.

About the Emerging Philanthropist Program (EPP)

The “Harrisburg Hoopla” field day is an event founded by EPP. This program teaches young professionals the process and importance of grant making in the nonprofit community, while providing resources and educational opportunities for Harrisburg’s developing leaders who wish to be actively engaged in giving back to their community. The experience culminates with class members applying their newly learned community and grantmaking skills by awarding a grant to a nonprofit organization. Participants choose the funding area based on their community needs assessment. After a competitive grantmaking process, a one-time $5,000 grant is awarded to a local nonprofit organization. To date, the Emerging Philanthropist Program has granted $15,000 to local nonprofit organizations. The Emerging Philanthropist Fund is an endowment fund used to ensure the $5,000 awards become sustainable for future participants. Harrisburg, PA – Summer is getting kicked off with a splash in Downtown Harrisburg this week. In conjunction with the Discover the Ducks Downtown outdoor exhibit, the Downtown Improvement District and Kamionka Entertainment Group are hosting a Duck Race. The Duck Race will take place on Wednesday, June 21st at noon.

Rubber duckies will float down Walnut Street (between 2nd & 3rd Streets). Duckies can be purchased for one dollar at DID, Pita Pit, Sandwich Man, Park Harrisburg managed by SP+, Amma Jo (in Strawberry Square) and at Sawyer’s (during open hours). The first duck to cross the finish line will win $1,000. All the funds raised from selling the ducks will benefit the Harrisburg Fire Department.

The highlight of race day will be when a team of four Harrisburg police officers face off against four Harrisburg firemen in a relay-style race on duck rafts. The winning team will receive a month of free coffee and donuts for their entire department at Anna Rose Bakery & Coffee Shop courtesy of Ron Kamionka.

“We are so excited to kickoff summer with such a unique event that not only raises money for our friends at the Fire Department, but also draws attention to our summer-long Discover the Ducks Downtown exhibit,” said Leigh Ann M. Urban, Director of Marketing for the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District. “Be sure to join us at lunch time for the first ever on-street rubber ducky race in downtown!”

Rubber duckies will be available for purchase through Tuesday at each of the businesses listed. There will be day-of sales for a limited time prior to the race on Walnut Street near Anna Rose Bakery & Coffee Shop. Thank you to Capital Region Water for their support of this event.

Harrisburg Young Professionals Announce Artists & Dates for Free Concert Series

HARRISBURG, Pa. (May 26, 2017) – Italian Lake Park at 3rd & Division Sts. in Uptown Harrisburg, once again serves as the location for the Italian Lake Concert Series, organized by Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP). The premier event of HYP’s Arts & International Committee, this marks the 6th year that HYP has offered the community free concerts performed by regional artists.

“The concert series has attracted many fantastic acts over the years and has brought many neighbors, families and friends together for beautiful summer evenings,” says Meron Yemane, HYP Board Member and former HYP President. Visitors to the event can enjoy not only the free live music, but the sculptures and gardens of the public Italian Lake Park. The series is held the 2nd Sunday of each month in June, July and August, and is free and open to the entire community.

The concert series kicks off on Sunday, June 11 featuring The Jayplayers. This central-Pennsylvania group is an Americana/Roots Rock act, based around the songwriting of Keeley McCue and Chris Weidensaul. Next up, on Sunday, July 9, is Ginger Coyle. She belongs to a lineage that stretches from Carole King through Fiona Apple, vocalists who borrow confidently from a soul music vocabulary while working mainstream pop territory. The final event of the series will be held on Sunday, August 13 with the music of Mark DeRose and the Dreadnought Brigade. They are identified as a rootsy, soulful, rock n roll band from Lancaster, Pa. The band includes members Mark DeRose (guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist), Ryan Shenk (backup vocalist, brass, guitarist), Frank Portario (backup vocalist, bassist) and Blake Hillard (drummer).
